HP Pavilion black screen with underscore

Hello everyone,

I have an HP Pavilion 2000 and recently, when I turn it on, it won't get past a black screen with a blinking dash (it would go past an HP logo, though). I have tried a system restore with f11 but it didn't work; I've also tried taking the battery off and putting it back on.

Does anybody have any advice about this?

0	Reinstalling would be the next best option, if you're using Windows Vista or higher, just run the install process and don't format and all your old files will still be saved on the hard drive in C:/Windows.old answered Nov 22 '12 at 02:04 Tim Fontana 15.2k●135●198●367

If you can get to a recovery console, you can try "fixboot" or "fixmbr".

I was able to install hexxeh's chromiumOS (since i really really needed the computer at the time) so I guess the harddrive didn't crash, then i upgraded to chromeOS but i would like to know if that means the OS on windows only crashed. thanks

It sounded like a software issue with the boot sector to me, but I can't be sure.
