Aside from rooting and installing a better ROM you have a few options. I have the same issue with my HTC EVO. Your best bet would be to do this:
Change all programs that periodically update to longer lengths. Have Facebook, mail programs, weather, and everything else check every 4 hours or even longer. I set them to not check at all and it only updates when I open the app.
Keep the brightness as low as you can. I have an app that allows me to toggle brightness in 25% intervals. I mostly keep it on 25% brightness.
Turn off sounds and vibration feedback for things like locking the phone or vibration feedback when selecting things or typing.
Not sure if your phone is like this but when mine is charging and reaches 100% it stops charging. So even though it has been on the charger for an hour at 100%, when I unplug it, it will quickly drop to about 90%. To counteract this, before you leave the house unplug your phone for a couple minutes then plug it back in to fill up the charge that was lost sitting on the charger. Then it won't drop down nearly as fast.
