Many of us are clearly very disappointed with Apple's decision to not provide iOS 6 to original iPad 1 owners (implicitly declaring it "EOL" status already!).

I suppose we can just about put up with missing out on functional enhancements.

However, is it dangerous to continue using the iPad 1 without security updates, etc.?

They pulled the plug on features sure.

But a security risk? Potentially, but I doubt we'll see anyone target 1st generation iPads. I'm not sure that there's enough valuable information left in that market. Assumedly, you'd want to update to latest and greatest generation. If I was someone trying steal data from iPads I would at least.

Well sir, I'm sorry to say but this is true with ALL Apple devices. Apple devices are guaranteed to see at least 2-3 major updates. So iOS 4, 5 for the original iPad. Also, with new updates it makes the device sluggish, citing iOS 6 on the iPhone 3GS. I know people who still have 1st gen iPod Touches who can't buy anymore games because they don't support the now ancient 3.1.3 firmware and me last year with my iPhone 3G, barely anything supported the also ancient 4.2.1 firmware. You're guaranteed to see at least 2-3 years on your device until Apple pulls the plug. I know it sucks but that's how it works.

Sounds like something apple would do, I guess you will just have to buy a new one, which is what apple wants you to do.

I suppose it is their choice when to stop support for a product, but it does seem a little soon.

Thanks for the answers guys. I'm still not totally clear how safe it is to continue using iPad 1 (now declared "EOL" by Apple). I will probably be forced to sell it for approx £100 and trade up.
