If you've seen my last question regarding installing the Ubuntu Server directly to the flash drive and booting from it, then you may already know more than I do.

So here is the problem. I formatted the USB to FAT32, but I could tell that something had gone wrong because the flash drive is 8 GB, but was only registering 6.43 GB. I am running Windows 7, so I opened the Start menu, right-clicked Computer, and selected manage. I then went into Disk Management and I could plainly see a partition of 1022 MB, so I right-clicked that and selected Delete. This did not remove the partition, but it left a non-deletable partition that, if right-clicked, gives the options:

  • New Simple Volume
  • New Spanned Volume
  • New Stripped Volume
  • Delete Partition
  • Help

The only selectable option is Help.

The partition has no letter value and the only label is "Free Space"

I will say this again: I formatted to FAT32, deleted the partition, and that leaves a "Free Space" partition that cannot be deleted.

Please help!

I would suggest using a freeware disk manager to see if it would take care of it, here is the one i use http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Free space is normally that... Unpartitioned space. You can either stretch the other partition out or delete it and make one that uses the whole thumb drive. If you have nothing on the partition worth saving I would just delete it and make a new one that uses the whole disk as it is less wear and tear on the thumb drive
