I've been watching my CPU in CPU-Z go from around 800mhz up to what its clocked at (3.08Ghz), is there a way I can stop it from doing this? or is this something normal? I have an Asus M5A78L-M LX board with an AMD Athlon II X2 240 Processor |

This is normal. It happens to save power and reduce heat. The best approach is to leave it as it is, the processor will manage itself, they all do these days |

I was just trying to figure why this happens. I'm trying to figure out how to get the best performance out of my system since i do alot of gaming, |

This is normal. It is to save power and prolong the life of your processor. It is like sleeping a little when you are not doing anything. But open up a program it will awake and increase the clock to make it run fast. I advise you do NOT go into the BIOS if you don't know what you are doing. |

Just curious, but why would you want to do this? It would shorten the life span of your internals and cause extra heat and power consumption when not needed. Anyways, As Razor said, you can choose that option in the BIOS. |

If you don't mind the extra power usage then reboot and hit delete to enter the bios, then look for an option called cool n quiet and disable it. For normal usage coon n quiet will not impact your performance but if you are gaming then it can sometimes cause stuttering (depending on the game) |
