I'm looking into getting a new Ultrabook with:

  • 3rd generation core i5 processor (3MB L3 cache and 1.7 GHz with boost up to 2.6 GHz)
  • 6 GB DDR3 memory
  • 500 GB HDD with 32 GB SSD

I mainly use iTunes, CyberLink PowerDirector 11, and Adobe Lightroom. I edit HD video as well as pictures.

My question is, will this computer be able to run these programs flawlessly individually? I don't plan on running these all at the same time. My current computer just can't handle any of these programs right now; sound and video is too glitchy to do anything.

It will work, but it's hard to say whether or not it will work well. Ultrabooks aren't meant for heavy load and video editing, they're meant to be used on the move and have a long battery life.

It's unlikely that it will perform outstandingly at these tasks, especially since Ultrabooks tend not to have a discrete graphics chip, instead relying on the iGPU in the processor on the Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge platforms.

If you need a computer for video editing, then for the same price, I must insist you get a desktop built with this intention. On the other hand, if having an ultrabook is the utmost priority, then go for that, but just be warned, it's unlikely that it will perform very well, Powerdirector is not incredibly taxing and this will work, and Lightroom should be okay, but don't expect outstanding performance and be prepared for long waits when you're rendering on the integrated graphics.

What do you think about a this computer... - AMD quad-core A10 (4600M accelerated processor) - 6GB DDR3 SDRAM - AMD Radeon HD 7760G graphics card

Which of these two computers do you think is better for what I'm trying to do?

It's hard to say really, both are good, but they have different uses. The ultrabook has more CPU power and the AMD laptop has more Graphics processing power. You'd need to look in to both of the programs that you wish to use and see what sort of load and processing power they will need. Also, on top of this, both of the programs that you wish to use aren't hugely intensive, I had a look in to this the other day and was meaning to get back to you sooner, Cyberlink used to be used by my school on the old computers and it didn't run overly well but they were nothing close to what you would be running. I think both would be acceptable if you chose to use them for these programs.

I have a MacBook Air with 8 GB of RAM and a Core i5 and while I CAN edit video on it, that's not really what its meant for. It can do it and it's rather speedy, but I wouldn't do anything too heavy on it.

I wouldn't say flawlessly but it will get the job done. For video editing and rendering you will need plenty of power. I would get a desktop if I were you but from your question I assume you want something portable

It will definitely get the job done, but like others have said, probably not to your greatest satisfaction.

So, you're getting an ultrabook, so I'd assume about $700. For $700, you could build yourself a computer that would far surpass this ultrabook in performance. You wouldn't get the mobility that you most likely want, but you'll get a computer that will save you many dozens of hours in rendering time.

Just tell me if you would like for me to assemble a parts list for you. I do need a final budget, and I need to know if you would be open to an AMD CPU (AMD CPUs are generally cheaper than Intel, so you'll get more performance per dollar).

The ultrabook with the i5 is still better

Debatable, the i5 is more powerful than the A10 on the CPU side, but the 7760G is more powerful than the Intel HD GPU of the i5. It all depends on the load of the programs that OP wishes to using.

How much do you need portability? If you're looking for performance, you should really build your own computer. For your needs, you really don't need a graphics card.

Remember, I am willing to assemble a parts list for you if you give me a price. Also, tell me if you want to include the operating system, screen, keyboard, and mouse in with it too. You don't have to use it, but it's just another option for you.
