I have 1 desktop monitor which is fullscreen (4:3) i am looking to add 1 more monitor to my setup will it be better if i just buy another fullscreen monitor or should i buy 2 widescreen monitors? (cost is not a factor) i mostly use pc for browsing web, youtube and will be learning programming online. it will be convenient to watch tutorials on one monitor and do actual programming on the another.

Since cost is not an issue, I would certainly recommend going with two widescreen monitors, you'll get a wider view and in my opinion, it looks geekier. :) Hope this helps!

I would agree with jjb0894. I would go with 2 wide screen monitors. Either Dell, Samsung, or Asus monitors. 4:3 monitors just don't look as good. I know I'm happy with my monitor, which is a Asus monitor. I will sometime be looking into another one, probably the same one for watching movies on one and web browsing on the other.

I have an Acer 20" widescreen I bought at BestBuy a few months ago for my MacBook Air a few months ago and I only paid $100 for it. I love it!

I recommend not only wide screen monitors, but specifically 2048px displays like these:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4844066

For whatever reason, they are just very affordable when compared to other displays that are over HD and the size. That and 2048px is a magical number. Web standard width is 1024 wide, because the smallest common displays today are 1024px across. So wide screen displays that are exactly 2048 (not 1920px) hold 2 browser windows perfectly and comfortably. Normal 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 displays are just under what is needed, so if you want 2 browser windows on a screen at the same time its oddly uncomfortable. With a 2048 display browsing is just more comfortable, it ends up feeling more like you have 4x 4:3's than 2x 16:9.

That and if you want an above HD display, usually you are spending $600+ not under $200. And HD is just barely not enough.

Just my 2 cents.

It's pretty easy! You can use something like this VGA splitter to setup multiple monitors easily. I was going to recommend a 4 way DVI splitter, but they are rather expensive, upward of $300 a piece!

Is it harder with a laptop 3 Montors?

(Feb 17 at 00:35) hyderpotter hyderpotter's gravatar image

I only got one VGA port.

No, it is no easier or harder to use on a laptop, and this is meant for computers with only 1 VGA port to run more than one display! :)

What about VGA to hdmi?

(Feb 17 at 00:59) hyderpotter hyderpotter's gravatar image

I found one that supports a single display here for about $42.

That VGA splitter will not work for multiple monitors unless you want the same display on every screen. It will not allow the displays to be different thus voiding the point of multiple monitors.

What about USB to VGA?

(Feb 17 at 09:08) hyderpotter hyderpotter's gravatar image

@Graciton: yes you will use the extend display key but windows will only see the one display not 3 different displays. The only way it will work is if you have a video card with multiple inputs or the USB to VGA thing I talk about below.

@hyderpotter: yes a USB to VGA adapter works because it acts as a separate video card. However, they have limitations on the resolution you can push through them like this one ( http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-Multi-Monitor-External-Adapter/dp/B002FJQXXC ) the max resolution is 1440x900. However it will work.

I recommend that you use the same monitor that you already have if you can still get it. and having two wide screens is nice
