We got a new router because the old one had the wrong protocol for the apple TV to work, the new router wont let me interact with my source control server on the local network. The source control server is on an old network switch, could this be an issue with the new routing protocol? Does the different routing protocol thing even make sense or was I just tricked into buying a new router?

What brand and model is the new router? Usually what I would do is to try and go with the settings of the old and bring them into the new one. granted there will be some changes where they will be located. Usually take a look at your old router not connected to the current network. And access the routers menu and take a look what you need to conffigure what you need on the new router.
