Hey, I have been checking out the Surface RT and the iPad mini and cannot make up my mind on which one I should get for Christmas. My primary use would be for word processing, videos, and social media. I know that the Surface RT has MS Office, but I have seen in many reviews that it's very stuttery and the interface is complicated to use. I have Windows 8 and my thoughts are mixed, but I love my iPhone 5. I enjoy using the 7 inch form factor on the Kindle Fire (1st Gen). I also want to know if the iPad mini fits in a pocket. Which one is better for my needs?

Well, if you are a user of online documents like Google Documents, I would recommend that you get a iPad, and just get a keyboard with that. It's a clean interface, and it's basically all you might need. It's also cost affective.
If you Need the power of MS office, then I just recommend you get a Windows 8 Ultrabook.

I would go for the iPad 4th gen. Skip the mini. Its the same cost as the Surface RT and very powerful. Has a lot more apps ready for it and a lot of developers that are working on it. Surface is a no go and the Pro version is too costly.

The Surface RT has got to be the most hit and miss tablet I've ever seen... Chris's unit was laggy and had lots of frame-drop (as he demonstrated) and then I've seen videos of just the opposite. My friend has one and playing with it, I thought Chris got a defective unit or something.
I think the Surface could be way more useful than an iPad (or iPad Mini) but it just seems to vary so much from tablet to tablet, I don't know if they're shipping with separate software builds or what's going on.
Personally I would go with a Surface (or two in case the first one is like Chris's) but I can certainly see why someone might want to just skip it for an iPad.

Apple's app ecosystem has so many choices for word processing, social media and videos, where windows RT only works with apps that are submitted to the windows store and therefore there aren't many choices as of now. The mini is light, portable.

Since you said alot of word processing i would say get a Windows 8 tablet but NOT the surface. There has been so many performance issues. If you want something that will integrate well with your iPhone and have the best app selection then easily the iPad Mini.
