I was listening to Pandora earlier today, and I noticed that some songs that came up were actually on mixtapes and not albums. For example this screenshot that I took here. That song was from a mixtape that was released in 2007. I'm wondering how does it get songs? Does it scour YouTube, iTunes, Billboard? I know something about the Genome Project but that's pretty much it.

I'm sure they simply pay the people that publish the songs to add it to their giant list of songs they are allowed to broadcast. Or even the artists/bands directly. It would explain the need for ads or payed service with less/no ads (Pandora One)

it seems that they allow people to mail them CD's to add to their network
still not sure about the mixtapes though since the legal rights are a requirement
