Other than the dimensions and the glossy look, are there any differences in the specifications or do they both use the exact same parts? Which one is still in production and which one is out of production?

yes, they all work the same. The only real difference is how you put in the disks. On the super slim i believe there is just a cover you slide over. The previous ones had slot loading drives. Apart from that its just the fact that its slightly smaller than the other 2 older versions.

Some of the original PS3s had backwards compatibility with PS2 games. But they got rid of that with later versions of the fat PS3 and completely rid of it in the next two versions (slim, slimmer)
