Which is correct film or movie

Film refers to a physical medium something is recorded on.
Movie refers to a production that you watch, regardless of what physical medium it is recorded/stored on (reel-to-reel movie film, DVD, Blue-Ray, etc.)

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, especially when referring to older movies, but this is the basic difference.

i guess its on your nature of langauge, here where i live in england like, when people go to the cinema to watch something they often say they're going to watch a film instead of movie, but if you're going to rent a DVD its often movie instead of film. then again, english is a complex language.

in america its almost always refered to as a movie. I always use the term film though and it has caused some confusion mainly a woman thinking i was referring to porn when i said film and very distraught when i said i wanted to direct a film someday.
