I've seen someone on here say that you need an i7 with 8 or 16GB of RAM to game. This is completely untrue, you don't need more than 8GB of RAM ever to game, and as for the i7, while it helps, an i5 is sufficient and the CPU is not even the key factor.
If you wish to use a computer for gaming, you need to chose a decent Graphics Processor. This is the key factor in determining whether or not you will be able to run the games you wish to run.
While Alienware laptops are gaming oriented, they are not good for the price you will be paying. These laptops were mentioned previously by Joe, and while a reasonable option, they are overpriced for what you get, as you pay for brand and styling.
For what you say you wish to be running, the specs you've mentions are fine, however, I would not consider that proper gaming, as it would run on almost any modern computer.
If you do need to be running more demanding, 3D, high quality games, then you will need to look in to a more powerful computer, but for what you said you wish to do, the computer you have listed is perfectly capable.

It would really depend on the games themselves, since that is not gaming orientated hardware.
More specific examples would help rather than a pretty generic description of what they run in, since the requirements for games developed under a given engine can vary quite significantly.
As long as what you want is not demanding then yes it will handle lower-end games, but might struggle on anything aimed at even basic dedicated hardware.

The i3 processor is not the real problem, the problem your going to have, is the intel HD3000 graphics. This is not the most powerful onboard graphics and struggles to play some more intense games. My sister got one by Acer, which was an Aspire model which came with the HD3000 graphics and it struggle to play games like Fallout 3 even with the tweaks. Playing basic games should work fine though.
