Desktop is my first choice, without a doubt...
I need my two screens :)
But obviously I have an laptop aswell for the portability, but I find myself using my iPad more and more for on the road stuff..

I do not see desktops being around for most users for much longer... the lines between desktops and laptops are getting thinner and thinner every day. Desktops will still be around for high performance applications, but for most users a laptop will be sufficient.

I'm sitting at my desktop now (Linux Mint 9- about to move to lucky 13)...I have a very nice Toshiba laptop, as well- which I use if I need to be mobile or in bed to watch a show.
But for power & in order to have a decent (24"+) monitor, it's desktop, hands-down. I have three HDD's & a nice, big video card in my tower- and I like to be able to swap HDD's around as I see fit. That's not happening with a laptop...
Towers, laptops, netbook, tablets...
There's room for all of it!

They each have their ups and downs. I personally prefer a laptop just because im a student and like to have the ease of portability with me. Though as some have said a desktop saves money and you get more for your buck. If your using an iPad i would have a desktop to do all my crunching and serious stuff on and even some games. Then I would use the ipad for portability and note taking for school. So it really depends on your needs, do you need lots of power but not portability, or would you like the convenience of portability?

I prefer using my desktop when I need to do work whether it is windows or linux base. But if I need to go mobile my toshiba tecra S3 with ultimate edition 3.4 linux works in a pinch when I am away from home and I am at a clients site. Or my G4 powermac when I need to use that as well.
