From those two choices, i5 CPUs are much better for general computing (including high end gaming), and who really needs the i7 performance unless you're editing videos?
I wonder why people think that they can't build a computer unless it's Intel. I see so many people wanting to build their computer, and I personally think that they should consider AMD. If you've got a budget over $1000, sure, go for Intel, but if you're looking for the absolute best bang for your buck, give AMD a chance!

I also say the i7 is not necessary, assuming you have a price limit for this computer. I would start piecing together the machine you want. Get the ram, video, and board you need for gaming. After that if an i7 is still within your budget then go for it.
