I'm pretty sure that they originally had the intention to make computers considering their name: High Tech Computers.

Maybe the question could also be "Should Nokia make computers?" They've been around longer and are arguably more common.

Nokia does produce computers like the Nokia 9500 Communicator.

HTC has/do produce High Tech Computers.

I used an HTC Advantage which was slowly phased out by the original iPhone 2G. Steve Ballmer used an HTC Shift during the whole UMPC frenzy. I'm confident that they probably have rebranded products on the market; not available in the United States.
