I love the new Mac Mini. They finally got rid of the 50 pound power brick! I think that it feels like a really solid machine. I would definitely give it a choice if I was buying a new Mac, but wasn't looking to spend a lot of money (even though I'm the kind of person who would spend $5,000+ just for a Mac Pro). |

It's a solid machine, and with the radical new design, the cost of R&D and manufacturing, I understand why it's increased in price, though at the same time it's the one thing that turns me off from it. If I were shopping for a Mac mini, I would of got it at the $599 USD price, but at $699 for the base model.. I would rather spend a little more for a Macbook or iMac. In fact if you try to match the Mac mini specs to the iMac, it will still have a lower clocked Core 2 Duo (2.66Ghz) compared to a higher clocked Core i3 (3.06Ghz) at the same price. Plus an iMac comes with a good quality 21.5" LED based IPS AMLCD screen... which is estimated at a price of $600-700. If you can't spend an extra $400-$600, and are only going for around a base line Mac mini, or you need a micro computer for a specific task (like installing in a car, using it for robotics, or other similar things I've seen), then the Mac mini would suite you. I'm hoping the price of it will drop at least in 2011 as R&D expenses are paid off and manufacturing costs go down... sadly Macs have a very high overhead for baseline products due to R&D, material, and manufacturing processes.. so things like the cases are not cheap to produce... and low ends like the mac mini, you end up paying more for the overhead cost than the specs / components. Personally I would wait, or look for the last generation (Late 2009 models) price around $500-$600 on average for baselines. |
