I am going back to school (finally) and need to take a basic algebra course. I feel like I might fail but it's not because I don't understand what I'm being taught, it's because I simply can't remember what was taught the first week of school by the time the mid term comes, not to mention finals. I take notes and I write down EVERYTHING that the teacher puts on the board but when the time comes to study I look back at the notes and none of it makes sense. I must be taking notes wrong so if you have any helpful tips on how to record the information and how to make it stick in my head that would be really helpful. thanks

Practice Practice Practice. Get out your book and work problems. If you need help, ask the teacher. That is the only way to survive a math course successfully.

Get a book, read the book, do the exercises, mark the exercises. Ask for feedback from your teacher regarding working out.

ok the way i learn is my going through all the basics first. i know people usually ignore the basics because they're just "basics" but the thing is if you don't know the basics then you won't have a good understanding. it's like you cannot build a strong building without a strong base.

So practise is the key to success and make sure you know all the basics such as formulas, and go through all the past papers and stuff.

thumbs up if you think its motivational

Do examples. You can never do enough. The best way to learn is to do.

I get your problem. Math isn't also my hobby. The best way to learn is really to just practice it. Ask your teacher or another student in you class if they can help you out. Try to stay awake during the lessons, make lots of notes and most imported MAKE YOUR HOMEWORK. I'm not a teacher, I just finished my exams so I know it's boring and hard. That's just the drill and there no other way..

Get some good text books, and actually use them. PRACTICE a lot with the examples in their books.

i have recently just finished the needed classes to get a minor in mathematics, as such i had taken math. it is not necessarily the fact that you are taking notes wrong but it sounds to me you are focusing on writing down everything and not trying to understand it as it is being taught. i found that looking back on math notes does not help me but the act of writing them down does.

my best advice is to do examples and try to understand as the teacher is teaching it, not later. also barns and nobles sells "spark charts" they have one on both algebra 1 and 2, look at buying them it will help.

Right now I'm taking geometry, and I have important regents coming up in about 5 days. I don't remember some of the stuff my teacher taught me, and some of the stuff like the postulates and theorems, I can't memorize some of those.

1st) Have a good teacher. You need to have a teacher that is willing to slow down, and explain the problems step by step.

2nd) At the end of every week, read over your notes, and try to remember what you learned and do some problems based on those notes.

3rd) If you don't understand something that the teacher taught you, and you still don't get it after going over it several times in class, ask somebody in your family if they know it. Maybe they can explain it to you better then the teacher could. If they don't know it, look on the internet. There are tons of websites that can help you with the problem.

4th) Pay attention in class. Don't goof of and talk with your friends, and start making jokes about the teacher or start talking about yesterday's game, and etc. Focus. Your there to learn.

When it comes time for the Algebra Regents check out this website for previous regents: regentsprep.org

I hope this helps you out & good luck with Algebra. Algebra is easy btw.
