iPhone on another carrier?

What would it take for another mobile carrier to take on the iPhone? What would it have to do to its present network coverage?

I personally would love to see another carrier be offered the iPhone, but I know it must be much more complicated than we realize.

Rumors are that in August sometime when Apples contract with AT&T for the US provider expire they will also go in on a contract with Verizon.

I am moving to Japan on Wednesday and will be switching my iPhone service to SoftBank. I will add more once I get a good fell for their coverage.
