I used AOL a couple times, way back when it first came into being, as well as CompuServe and Prodigy.

I don't remember paying for an account on any of those ISP; I really only used them during free trial offers and then cancelled the service since I was a poor college student back then. The only exception to that is CompuServe, which I had access to via my parents' paid account.
