I was going to buy an epiphone SG since i earned some money and like that guitar, but are epiphone SG's great? I was also looking at a guitar less heavy in weight. Between: Paul allender SE SG Epiphone I still don't know which one to get :/ |
The question has been closed for the following reason "I knows what to get :)" by Patxi Mar 13 '11 at 10:39

It depends what sound you want out of it. The Les Pauls are heavy and are built to help notes sustain. The SGs are pretty light, easy to use. It all depends on what you play and how you play. I think less pauls are crap, I have a Strat u cannot beat the single coils with a less paul I told that in ur post about Grunge I just need a guitar that doesn't weight a lot. The strat's weight is doing harm to my shoulders. Oh they have different sounds. Strats have a very sharp attacking sound, good for grunge like you said. Les Pauls are good for different styles. I've got a Vorg Les Paul copy. Its fantastic. I'm buying a Kramer Assault 220 FR soon too. 1
Les Pauls and Strats are completely different guitars, they cannot be compared. But between the two the Les Paul is much more versatile and can be used for a lot more different kinds of music. Doesn't matter to me cause I got both anyway :) And also, a Strat is literally the lightest guitar made, so how weak are your shoulders? My friend told me SGs are lighter =0 some editions might be, but its an absolutely negligible difference. But Strats and Les Pauls are on a upper level, I'd hate to downgrade to an SG from a beautiful Stratocaster, unless you're getting a better brand one, and of course it matters what kind of music you play. Lots of guitar threads today hm.... I want to play some: Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Paramore, Default, Cradle of Filth, Stratovarious, Trivium, Dimmu Borgir, Lacuna Coil,Muse and some others :) Probably Alternative-Metal. Ya, a Strat is probably the worst guitar for any kind of metal, the SG would be an improvement and thinking back on my SG days, it was quite a light guitar. But to reiterate for the millionth time, nothing beats out a Les Paul for ultimate versatility, especially the music you listed, though I'm not so familiar with those bands, haven't liked metal since I started playing guitar. Well is not that bad...I mean Iron Maiden uses them. Although there are betters, and my strat is broken :( that's why I was aiming at a new guitar. 1
Yeah a few bands use them, in my opinion though single coils are the last thing I would ever use for any sort of heavy music. Plus Strats hum like crazy so it isn't exactly good for a distorted environment. A strat is best suited in my opinion to really expressive guitar like David Gilmour or any sort of post rock (then again Les Pauls are frequently used in that genre as well). I guess if you had an HSS Strat it could handle metal a little better, but then again it isn't really a traditional strat anymore. In the end it's all a matter of personal preference anyway. I decided on the SG I guess I wanted this model for over a year: http://www.amazon.com/Epiphone-Limited-Electric-Maestro-Tailpiece/dp/B002NCOBN0 in musiciansfriend there aren't any copies left since it was a limit edition and my mum didn't let me last year to get it but I found one in Amazon, 100$ more but ok I guess I just hope it doesn't cost a lot to ship it to Puerto Rico :/ Looks good, I'd personally get one without the vibrato bar cause it sort of defeats the purpose of a tune o matic bridge, unless your into that vintage sound you mean like this one? http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=518291V or is there a better SG between good price range? Ya exactly, that is a little bit towards the low end on the price scale but basically any Epiphone should be a good quality. Just one thing, I would NEVER EVER buy a guitar online, every single guitar sounds, feels and plays different, you have to go to the music store and shut yourself in their sound room and play lots of them before you decide which one you like best.

PRS Guitars are pretty common to use. The epiphone SG is pretty basic, i use them a lot its easy to use and is kinda light. And the epiphone Lespaul is the shizz, probably because most Lespauls are similar and kick ass. |

Epiphone's are a great deal better than cheaper knockoffs and far better value than the full on gibson (which would cost you around £700 more. I've played an Epiphone SG and a Gibson SG and yes the gibson is nicer but no way is there £700 difference there! So yeah it's a great guitar, enjoy! |
