I currently have a windows vista with intel core 2 quad CPU and a nvidia geforce 130gt with 739mb dedicated graphic memory, and i was wondering is it better to have windows xp running on it or windows vista? Since windows vista is newer i tought that it will use the strength of the computer better than windows xp, is this true? |

Vista is garbage. Get rid of it, if you can, at any cost. It's proven to be slower than Windows XP. Chris has discussed this topic multiple times in his videos. I believe Windows XP will run better on your system than Vista, but keep in mind that Windows 7 is designed to take advantage of newer hardware, where-as XP is designed for older hardware... When considering this in leiu of your hardware, it is clear that Windows 7 would be a better choice than Windows XP, but Windows XP is the answer to your question. |

None of those are good get windows 7 becuase it's faster and it will make your computer really fast |

Windows xp in my humble opinion, is leaps and bounds better than vista . From the word go vista was a complete flop for Microsoft. Vista has some nice features but they feel unfinished and clunky/awkward. Xp may look a bit "fisher price" but it's a solid stable operating system and I would recommend it over vista anyway. (windows 7 I feel is better still, but clearly that's not what you were asking) |

I'd like to point out that if you have reasonably new hardware, your computer might be 64-bit compatible. Obtaining the 64-bit version of Windows XP may not only be nearly impossible, but it had considerable compatibility issues. The Windows 7 install disc comes with both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions on the same DVD. It works flawlessly on my laptop, although we couldnt get it to install the 64-bit version on a similar HP laptop just a year older than this one. If I recall correctly, a 32-bit operating system cannot address more than 4 gb of RAM. |

I wouldn't put xp on that box because updates will end soon. Also it is super easy to crack. @imacgnome suggestion gets a thumbs up but i would also suggest exploring ubuntu as a dual boot option. You can install and uninstall it with in windows with wubi and it wouldn't cost you anything. However buying vista over 7 would not be future proofing your system and you would lack the newer features. Windows 7 is faster than vista but not as fast as XP when it comes to hardware. |

Vista is crap. XP is better than Vista and even 7 in some ways. Actually Windows kind of sucks in general. |

When it comes to application performance and the speed of loading parts of the OS, windows xp beats windows vista and windows 7. (if you don't believe me, boot all 3 of them, you can download an iso image of it and test the OS for free for 30 days, then run some benchmarks (pick benchmarks that run on all 3 OS'es ) both vista and windows 7 rely mainly on superfetch in order to counter some of their bloat. Many elements of the OS have gotten much larger which still doing the same function since windows xp. more code means more loading. So microsofts way around it is superfetch which is basically time shifting, extend your bootup time and increase memory usage when windows starts, so items that would otherwise load slowly will load faster because instead of them being located on the hard drive, they are located in RAM. Superfetch doesn't work on all programs, but the ones it does works on will allow for stuff like this, if a app takes 10 seconds to load, superfetch can spend like 8 seconds or so loading main parts of the app into memory so when you do run the app, it will load faster. but the benefits (if you don't care about having less memory available and a slower bootup) quickly go away if you one massive program like a game. Almost all versions of windows, if the program wants more memory than is available, windows will move certain items in memory into pagefile (lag spike caused at the opening and closing of the app when windows does this). When this happen, much of the superfetch data will be lost which pretty much means you wasted time having the startup delayed to load extra stuff into memory just to have windows remove them to make room for a program that needs the memory |

Dont switch to XP Switch to 7 Way better than Vista or XP |

I have not had any problems with Vista. I have XP on 2 computers, and Windows 7 on a laptop, and Vista on a desktop, as well as an iMac with Tiger on it that I never upgraded, and I have a brand new laptop MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard on it, just got it about 2 months ago. There is no beating the MacBook Pro. It is lightning fast and boots up in less than a minute and shuts down immediately. I plan to get a new iMac desktop and probably eventually stop using Windows machines. |

No it's not. It's just a lighter load on CPU/GPU/RAM making your machine extremely comfortable and happy. Switching to Win7 will, in fact make it perform the same, IF NOT slower for a couple reasons.
I've said this a few times in the community already, and I'll say it again. Windows 7 is nothing but a really over-cooked, glorified, more-esthetically-pleasing version of Windows XP, with a few new features. I think MS realized that with Vista they threw simply too much CRAP into it, and even MS will admit an oopsie! There's a reason when you go on YouTube, that there is a video where just before the launch of Windows 7, someone interviews Bill Gates and asks "what's the one version of Windows you wish you could have improved upon or made better?" His response? (chuckling) "Well, I'll be more open to answering that when we ship the next version of Windows." ........!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL That said it all - from the horse's mouth himself. |
