VMware fusion help.

I i'm looking at a way to run windows on my mac. I was wondering if with VMware fusion do i have to own a copy of the os that it is make a virtual machine of, for example, i want windows 7 do i have to buy a full version for VMware fusion to work.I also want to knew if it is easy for a average to moderate tech user to install and use.I'm not computer stupid just i havn't been on OS X for a while.
