How much beer/alcohol a person can consume before getting intoxicated varies due to a number of things, including:

  • the alcohol content of the beer, measured as a percentage of its total volume. Some beers contain a higher percentage (more) alcohol than others. See RealBeer.com and others for alcohol contents of various beers.
  • the person's weight and height
  • whether or not the person has eaten any food prior to drinking the alcohol (food will absorb/counteract some of the initial effects, but can lead to drinking too much because you may not notice its effects it as quickly.)
  • the person's general tolerance for alcohol -- my father's actually allergic to alcohol and gets a very bad headache if he has so much as a beer!

There are many other factors, including simply age and experience at knowing one's own limits and physiological responses to alcohol.

NOTE: It's entirely possible to be intoxicated (drunk) and not recognize it, especially if you're an inexperienced drinker, either due to age or trying a type of alcohol you've never been exposed to before. ALWAYS drink responsibly and do NOT drink and drive. That "buzz" isn't worth dying for...

Aside from what has already been mentioned, how the beer (alcohol) is consumed into the body is also a factor. I read that beer consumed via the exit only is "The Fastest Way to Get Drunk"?! WTF?!? Why? I also read that you can die from alcohol poisoning ... more. I also know that alcoholic drinks can be vaporized, then inhaled. (Alcohol WithOut Liquid)

Sweet pic, man. Yes, that's the fastest way to get drunk. It's also the fastest way to cause serious damage to your colon ;)

It depends on the person and how tolerant they are.

Depends on the beer and stomach. From 3 to 5 bottles.

It depends on your BMI (Body Mass Index). The fatter you are, the more you can consume. Muscle rejects alcohol, fat consumes it. So the more muscle and less fat, the quicker it is for you to get drunk.

One of my friends, who only weighs 90lbs, gets drunk from a half bottle. Very little alcohol makes her drunk.

How long is a piece of string? How proned to alcoholism is that piece of string? What time frame are you talking about? I could consume 5 cartons in a year and not be legally drunk, or I could consume 5 cartons in an hour and be dead drunk.

depends on a lot of things. I know there's an iPhone app for that called How Drunk http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/how-drunk/id394629693?mt=8

There's another three factors that haven't been mentioned, actually: time and the temperature of the beer and level of activity.

I could drink a carton over a year and not be legally intoxicated at all. However, if I were to drink a carton over 4 hours I'd be trashed. What sort of time frame does this question assume?

I could drink a single bottle of tooheys extra dry platinum (which is one of my favourite drinks), at room temperature, go for a jog and at the end of the jog, feel quite drunk because my digestive system is digesting quickly. The body can digest warmer things easier.

If I were to sit down and a cold drink, however... Well, I remember one new years eve I drank 3 bottles of $60 chilled white wine at a restuarant (they actually charge double the price at restuarants, so it was $120 per bottle). I felt quite sober the whole time because I was sitting down and my body wasn't digesting it quickly due to the cold temperature ;) After getting up to go to a nightclub, dancing at the nightclub for 5 minutes I started to feel sick... I ran outside and threw up right in front of a police officer. That'll learn me for being young! ;)
