I'm looking at TomTom vs Garmin Nuvi. Looking to spend no more than $150 US. What model, etc do you recommend?

Go for tomtom or Garmin. My sister uses a Garmin all the time. My parents use a Tomtom...that I got for them...I am stuck with a choice of a Garmin and a Gagellan. Magellans have nice graphics like Garmin BUT it can lead you to the wrong direction...a lot...once, it was leading me to a hotel. I can see the hotel on the right side, and it told me to turn LEFT...and then it started to lead me in circles...which was extremely stupid...eventually, I turned it off and get to the hotel in like 3 minutes.

Any kind of TomTom or Garmin. They are both pretty good brands.

While I'll lean towards Garmin every day of the week, finding one in that $180 range is going to give you LOTS of form and function. I have to hand it to most of the new smartphones too. It's a terrible drain on battery life, but the service, direction calls and more are solid.

I prefer the Garmin brand products. Easy to use, nice graphical user interface.

I'm one to prefer Garmin. I've used both and the TomTom for me doesn't cut it. For me it was hard to navigate. But the Garmin was very easy, very simple to use.

I say you get an android phone that runs Android 2.1+ since it comes with Google's Navigation app, which is actually pretty good

I've only ever owned Garmin brand portable GPS navigation units. We have them in all of our vehicles, on our bicycles (road bicycling) and even ones we use for geocaching/hiking.

I have the newer unit, the 885, but this one should be right up your alley -- it's $141 and change on Amazon.com: alt text

Why Garmin?

  • a consistently good value and dependable
  • tend to be on the leading edge of user interface design (my current GPS navigator in the car, for example, accepts voice commands/routing requests.)
  • well-supported and often receive firmware updates long after other companies "obsolete"/retire a product
  • Garmins also tend to hold their value well over time, such that I've always been able to sell my old Garmin units on eBay to help fund the purchase of new Garmin units.

I think the Tomtom is the best, because its easier to use. Well best GPS I've seen in cars is the Ford Navigation System.

The modern Ford Navigation System is indeed good (though I prefer Garmin for ease of upgrading hardware & software.) The 2005-2007 nav system offered in Fords, however, was very sub-par -- CD-ROM rather than DVD based, etc.

I like using Google Maps on the iPhone. I don't need much else.
