Will the Playstation network ever be as good as Xbox live?

.I've been using the Playstation network for some time now and yeah they have made improvements but the network still needs work.

.Xbox live is great! but you have to pay for it.

.Do you think that Playstation can/will fix this problem or do you think they will have to charge for online like Xbox does?

there has been rumor that psn is losing money by not charging. but i dont think they will ever charge for online. i bet that in a future system update release for the psn, they may make some improvements to the online experience, but some games out now will probably need patch updates to be compatible with it as well. if they are willing to do that much work for nothing? i dont know
