There are a few people cheating for the Optimus Maximus giveaway. We can readily view IP addresses, watch karma scoring trends, user patterns, etc. It's pretty obvious who is and who is NOT truly participating and adding value.

If you believe I'm bound to honor the giveaway if you attained 100,000 karma points by cheating the system... you're sadly mistaken. We know who you are. ;)

So... Is anyone judging the quality of the questions/comments that are being voted up en masse?

The thing people always fail to realize is that when you cheat, you make doing the give away that much more complicated. Meaning it takes more effort to do them, meaning the less inclined people are to hold them. Not just Chris but anyone.

Play fair, and ye shall benefit greatly, try and trick the system, and ye shall regret it.

I think cheaters not only should NOT win, but should be BANNED instantly from the site. Further more, since they dont think there is any consequences to doing such things, there name should be made public knowledge. Cruel? No crueler then some one trying to win a prize by cheating others out of there chance to win it.

I believe in being fair, everyone given the same chance. Denying others of there equal chance, is lower then low in my book.

Have a nice day. :) Thanks again Chris for running this give away, and going through the head aches involved.

I think he should just say that you can only have one account per IP address in the FAQ. Then he should only allow one registration per IP address.

This still won't stop friends on different networks from teaming up, but it will for sure make things a lot simpler.

One account per IP is just stupid. Limiting one account per person is the Right Choice™ but it's not easily enforced. Anyway, I trust @Chris has the ability to identify and handle 99% of cheaters.

I think the term was The Right ThingTM.

@tsilb, Oh, sorry, my mistake. But someone else already trademarked that. =[

The Right Thing is a term that dates back to the 50's and 60's at the TX-0 and PDP-6 labs at MIT. It's a fundemental tenent of the Jargon File and therefore pervasive throughout our subculture. :)

I don't think OSQA has a feature to limit an IP address to one user, but it's definitely something that is needed.

This is interesting.

You can see a huge karma jumps on graphs just to prove it.

Cheaters win all the time, in all different types of contests. The reason they win is because they participate in competitions for which there is little to no proper accountability, such as in Politics.

Here, there is accountability. People are tracking people, patterns have been identified and analyzed. The ones who exhibit those patterns will be disqualified. So in this very specific context, no; cheaters cannot win. However, in the broader sense, they can and all too often do.

I think the person linking to malware should be removed from the community ASAP, and the proper authorities notified.

(Jun 10 '10 at 13:37) Seb Seb's gravatar image

Someone's linking to malware? I haven't seen that... I presume you're introducing a new subject?

(Jun 10 '10 at 13:57) tsilb tsilb's gravatar image

They also appear to be getting a lot of karma points for useless comments. Why are they the only ones getting karma points for useless comments?

(Jun 10 '10 at 13:58) Seb Seb's gravatar image

The unexpected Karma is clearly an instance of the aforementioned use of multiple accounts or friend vote pooling.

It also bugs me that some users have gone on vendettas against us high karma users (me, at least), downvoting a dozen questions or answers in a row within seconds of each other.

One problem therein is that we don't have clear rules posted like we do in other places (i.e. #chris chat room).

(Jun 10 '10 at 14:02) tsilb tsilb's gravatar image

When you log into the chat you will have a memo from me stating the reason i up/down one question.

(Jun 10 '10 at 14:06) Michael Michael's gravatar image

Ahhh, so now I know who you are on here :)

I'm not worried about one downvote. I'm worried about when one user puts in 10-20 in a row.

I kinda give up already...I don't really like answering questions...I only like to see what people like to say. My answers are usually crap...and aren't very useful.. since people usually have better responces than me:'(

Yes, we are. We already have a list of a few names of people we've caught red-handed.

Have you sent out any cease-and-desists? :)

(Jun 10 '10 at 09:57) tsilb tsilb's gravatar image

I'm not cheating. But I agree with you, if anyone is cheating it is very obvious that they are. An admin can easily see multiple users with the same IP.

I just wish whoever will make it to 100,000 points luck because they will need it. While that is happening I will enjoy posting things on this great community.

I had been keeping an eye out and screenshotting proofs on those people Chris, based on their actvity. We want people to legitly to win, not by cheating the system.

It's pretty easy. Lots of the people that randomly came to the top of the list are usually cheaters (not gonna mention names, but you know what I mean). Also, just check their karma history, they show the same people voting up all their answers. That's cold, solid proof right there. :)

(Jun 09 '10 at 22:02) chadt4 chadt4's gravatar image

I have a screenshot of one question getting 3 votes from only 5 views (that means more than half of the viewers have a +1 vote) and no answers. I doubt that will happen.

(Jun 09 '10 at 22:18) kevin ♦♦ kevin's gravatar image

No kidding. It's rare enough to get 3 votes even on a good question. Look at this one, for example. Hundreds of views, 5 answers, and only 1 vote

I came here for the keyboard, but it's pretty obvious I won't be winning it now. Meanwhile, thanks for the site Chris, it went to the top of my most visited list where it belongs.
