My 8 year old son wants his own computer; should I get him a Windows PC or a Mac? Please tell me why.

8 years old!?!?!?! that is kind of young for getting someone their own computer, isn't it? you might be good getting a computer and putting Edubuntu on it. It is a education linux distribution with nice games and applications.

Just a cheap second hand PC will do the trick, make sure you have internet filters on it.

My suggestion is buy him all the individual parts and walk him through building it or get him a laptop. My dad helped me build my first computer around that age, and now I am fifteen and a wiz with tech.

Probably Windows, if you give him Windows, he will get smarter than with a Mac, but a Mac is easier.

Neither! At that age I suggest a simple Linux that allows him to easily surf the web or create simple documents. As he gets older you can upgrade software and hardware.

What does he want to do with his computer? Do you plan on buying him games to play on it, or is he going to play online, web-based games? Will he be using it for school or planning to take it over to friends' homes to work and play together?
The answers to the above help decide if he would be best served by a desktop or a laptop computer. At that point, you can decide which operating system is the best fit for the programs you already own or plan to purchase for him.

Get him a Mac. Mac has Steam now so Macs can game. If he is a gamer, get him a Mac and let him experience the thrill of being involved in a new community. You can also install Windows on a Mac if necessary. Linux is a good OS but not for inexperienced users unless your using Ubuntu.

If I had an 8 year old, personally, I would get him an iPod touch to start. Easy to block content, and more portable. He will use that more than a computer. But if thats not what you want to do, then I suggest getting him a Mac.
