How much RAM is "too much"?

Obviously there are many systems around these days that don't have enough RAM, but on the other end of the spectrum, some people go way overboard. Call it future-proofing, call it going crazy, but people do it.

Personally I have 8GB and haven't gotten past 6GB used.

I believe that when you go over 16 then you are throwing money out of the window. You don't need that much if you aren't going to host a server or do some rendering.

You can NEVER have too much ram, only too little. If you can get the most ram your OS (and computer) will support.

I'd be struggling to tell the difference if I was, say, browsing the web on a system with 32GB RAM and 64GB RAM

Personally, 4 gigs of ram should be more than enough for anyone. I have three and never go past 2.5 gigs.

RAM is only limited by three factors:

  • Motherboard
  • Cost
  • Processor

32-bit processors (e.g. Pentium 4) can only go up to 4GB (3GB on Windows). 64-bit processors (e.g. Core i7) can have more memory.

If you have an Intel i7 is anything really over 6 GB really worth it? Nope not really. If you have an AMD X4 is anything over 4 GB really worth it? Nope not really. No wait I guess it now will truly depend on your OS and what applications you are using. Then again do you really know of any applications that require 128 GB of ram? Nope not really but still 128 GB of ram gives you barging rights doesn't it.

I have 4GB as of now... I will upgrade to 8GB soon. Virtual Machines + Photoshop + Dreamweaver, etc takes up ALOT of RAM... I would go higher than 8GB, but my mobo won't allow it :(

Sometimes its not the quantity of ram that you that its important, Ram needs to be fast and stay at low temperature theres people that have 6-8GB RAM (667mhz) but its never equal to 4Gb (2200mhz) u chose quantity or quality! Or both if u have money to spend.

Theres no too much ram theres simply Systems that dont read more then "X" Ram... But like lives always evolving you can get how much ram u want to... =D
