How much RAM is "too much"?

Obviously there are many systems around these days that don't have enough RAM, but on the other end of the spectrum, some people go way overboard. Call it future-proofing, call it going crazy, but people do it.

Personally I have 8GB and haven't gotten past 6GB used.

RAM doesn't make the computer that much faster.

I use 8gb, but the only time I've ever needed it was when I was running a couple of VM's

RAM is more for allowing you to run more att he same time

I purchased memory for a build one time. Got home, and started the build the next day, fired up the computer and started using it. Well, the memory failed in 2 days. Shut down and took the mem back to the store. In the meantime, they had a sale or markdown on mem so I wound up getting for a few more dollars, twice as much RAM as I had initially bought. So it was WIN-WIN. Went from 8g to 16g.

It'll depend on what your doing with the computer itself. Unless your going to be going into something like using Oracle, Sybase, Teradata RDBMS (Rational DataBase Management Systems.). All of those three use a lot of ram and cache to the drives themselves as well. Or like some others here are doing or setting up ramsdisk for something that needs copying of some sort.

4 GB will be much enough to work. I am working with 4GB ram and my PC has good speed.

The "too much" there is when it comes to RAM is how much your OS and motherboard can handle.

I have 12GBs in my mac pro. Sometimes I could do with 16GB. I think you can't have too much Ram When I was using PCS I had a Laptop less than 1GB (I think it was Half of a GB), on my desktop I just upgraded it to 2GB.

When you're duct taping one RAM stick to another that's too much RAM.

I'm running 16GB and loving it.

I work with a lot of virutal machines so the extra ram pay's for it self.
