Could you control your computer without the GUI (graphical user interface) using dos or termninal if for some reason it crashed and that was all you had for a day or so? I can only do basic stuff before I have to go to google for help. I get stuck when I have to edit files. But as I learnt how to use the internet while asking the question using w3m under linux (w3m http://lockergnome.net/) then potentially I could. |

With some OSes yes. Linux can use a GUI or a CLI. The 9x versions of Windows uses DOS as their base, so you can control the OS w/o a GUI. Unfortunately, the later versions of Windows (based on NT) will just show a BSOD or if it can't show on startup, in Safe Mode. |

On Macs you can do it. I forget how to get there, but I did it to fix my teachers computer. |

Yes. In fact, Ubuntu Server Edition is run entirely from the command line. I don't know if that's relevant to a PC, but it is possible. |

I could, but it would be so much different. I probably couldn't do as much with a CLI than a GUI. |

I think I'd be able to get around. If you type in "help | more" on the command line, it gives you a list of everything you can do. Then you can type the command name /? for information about it, as well as the switches you can use. |

This is what the first computer where like. Command Prompts is what they used. |
