A lot of controllers I tried don't come with any drivers for the Mac, and thus will not work with Steam. Games like Portal are hella hard with a keyboard and mouse (any PC game for me is hard with a keyboard and mouse, since I'm mostly a console guy. Always played console games, almost never played PC games. Keyboard and mouse is foreign to me.)

just practice with the keyboard, once your mind maps out the hand eye co-ordination in response to the game you will feel natural, i can use both and when i first ever tried on a keyboard i couldent move without hitting walls and all sorts, you will actually find that keyboard combined with mouse is an unstoppable combo once you a fluent with it.

The Microsoft XBox 360 controller works, though it doesn't come with a driver. But there is a third party driver out there (sorry I forgot the link)

Keyboard and mouse is best, but...

I've used both the PS3 and Logitec controllers with no issues. The Logitec is very cheap - highly recommended.

Does the XBOX 360 Plug 'n' Play kit work?

No. The plug'n'play is only capable of transferring power, not data.

You can buy a wireless adapter for your PC that allows you to use your wireless Xbox 360 controller with your PC.
