I seem to have bumped into a bit of a glass ceiling in this whole "community". I understand the instructions in theory that questions must be "relevant to the community". However, with those who are self policing the issue of relavancy in a contest, I sense a conflict. Several posts from others and my own experience suggest that those in power might be curtailing subjects out of self interest. Even Chris Pirillo is posting on pizza and movies so venturing off the tech subject (nobody's accusing him of spam though...LOL) should be fair game. Methinks the rules either need to be tightened up a bit OR those in power need to have some type of review OR there needs to be some type of an appeals process.

As the saying goes...power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely! Has anyone else noticed this in their posts? Those with over 1000 karma, well I will appreciate your comments BUT you will understand if we don't exactly weigh it equally...LOL!

BTW, someone asked why this post was tagged with the word "suicide"...I thought I was committing it by asking this question :P

Just a note, I'm still seeing a lot of questionable closing of questions. Let me please request that those of you with the power please restrain yourselves. I saw one such person answer a question, select himself as the person who answered the question (I disagree BTW), then he closed the question. Now if that isn't abuse of power, I don't know what is...

i understand what you are saying, the main issue is the community is self policed, that means these people who get on top then control whats on top,

in my opinion people posting "post your favorite picture" or "show me your desktop" or similar questions should defiantly be locked down, but ussually the people doing this have like 4k karma built up.

REPOSTED FROM A COMMENT...Two points:

First, Chris I am a BIG FAN of your work and overall I love what you've done with most everything I've seen over your career. In this case I'm just saying loosen the reigns a little cause we're making up rules as we go and the prize here is a keyboard. Maybe a nice keyboard, but it is still just a keyboard. Now make it some serious money and print out more specific rules and then maybe you can clamp down some more. I'm just saying if you want to see proliferation of ideas, then this isn't the approach to take.

Second, editing I think is a whole other issue much like voting which deserves some attention. For example, I've noticed that one of the top icons has become sort of a self appointed discussion closer regarding "duplicate discussions". Now just because someone is the first person to ask a specific "type" of question doesn't mean that they've asked the "BEST" question. Also, you open yourself up to discretionary closings too if you aren't militant about it. I noticed, for example, that some discussions on the outcome of the FIFA World Cup were closed because of "duplicate discussions" but not all (and there were several). Is it better to just leave them alone and let people pick the best question from which to reply/vote? I'm actually not sure here BUT the current approach seems arbitrary...

Why are "poorly-phrased questions edited"? To go in and edit the way someone is saying something according to the way YOU think it should be said is VERY presumptuous. Why does it matter how people are saying things. This gives the power of editing peoples thoughts to people who you have no way of knowing whether they are knowledgeable about English.

I posted the following suggested rules of the road as it were on the linked discussion above. What does everyone think?

All questions should be asked and answered in the spirit of adventure and mutual respect. Try, within the context of debate and discourse, to be as polite as possible...even when disagreeing fervently. Try to treat the other members of the community according to the "Platinum Rule" in the way that they would like to be treated. In addition, the following activities should be specfically banned:

  • No vulgarity or lewd speech
  • No hate speech in any language (i.e. racial slurs, defamation of character, or bashing of anyone/anything due to race/color/creed/religion)
  • No personal attacks - I would be lenient in my enforcement of this element since you want to promote dialogue rather than diminish it.
  • Nothing of a sexual nature, including pictures and adult content
  • No "Karma Harvesting" as defined on the FAQ page and don't creatively expand the definition.
  • No discussions of personal issues should be kept generic in nature (i.e. do not use specific names, locations, telephone numbers, email addresses, etc.) This includes you Chris...LOL
  • No spamming

Are there others that I've missed? I've tried to combine items from several discussions that I've participated over the past week.

Thanks in advance for your input....
