So I currently have about 2 - 3 computers in my house which all connect wirelessly to the router. I also have 2 - 3 Xbox 360's which also require the internet. two of the xbox's connect to the router by ethernet cable and the other by wireless. We currently use a Linksys WRT54G v2 router which runs the DDWRT firmware. While this router runs well with the multiple computer connections, we have trouble playing on live on two Xbox's. The wired xbox would connect to xbox live just fine, but when the wireless xbox connects, we start to have trouble with connecting to parties and joining games together. Also the wireless xbox can't connect to live, unless we turn off the wireless on one of the computers. I've opened the necessary Xbox 360 ports in the firmware and switched from port forwarding to port triggering, as I've read that port forwarding only allows 1 Xbox have an open port. Sometimes family and friends would come over with laptops and connect to the same router. So now we're looking for a new router which will handle the 3 Xbox connections and the multiple computer connections. We would also like a router which is reliable as our previous Linksys WRT54GS v4 and v6 became faulty. |

it depends on your internet connection speed. if you have a 30 mbit or less connection then even your current router will handle gaming properly. do not buy into routers being marketing as gaming with an insane price markup, all they are doing is adding QOS, and even then it never compared to the QOS offered by dd-wrt or better yet tomato (best QOS so far) If needed, you can try setting some QOS rules to better share the connection by prioritizing the traffic of your games (either by increasing the priority of the ports used by the various consoles and games, or having a default priority for all traffic, then lowing the priority of bulk traffic like web browsing, and p2p traffic. if the free steps fail, then you can go with a good router that allows 3rd party firmware. I use a WNR3500l http://www.amazon.com/Netgear-WNR3500L-Gigabit-Wireless-Router/dp/B002RYYZZS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1362702352&sr=8-1&keywords=wnr3500l and it is running tomato with QOS rules to ensure that torrents and other traffic will not impact my games (I can torrent ant get little to no increase in ping with my multiplayer games) |

I need a little bit of help with purchasing a new router. I got an xbox a couple weeks ago and my belkin router just isn't cutting it, and their customer service sucks so I can't figure anything out. They claimed that a new router wouldn't help but I'm gonna go ahead and call that BS. I found this site last night looking around wireless gaming routers and I'm considering the netgear ac 1780 model (I think that's what it is) because I've read pretty good reviews, but I've heard their customer service sucks too. Anyways any help or suggestions would be really great before I make the purchase? |
