Go with the MacPro, because it holds more memory.

Well, whacha gonna do with it?

But I'd go with the first one cos' it's got way better specs and probably cost less. That is assuming that the second one actually is a Mac pro and not a MacBOOK pro.

Mainly movie's, music, gaming, pretty powerful computing, (Premier Pro, PhotoShop, etc)... and the second one is a Mac Pro... they are both about $2,800

(Jun 12 '10 at 16:31) Timsta92 Timsta92's gravatar image

Well then I'd defiantly go with the first one because of the better specs, not to mention that you don't have to buy a monitor. That right there will save you $300-$1000.

If you plan on expanding anything other than the RAM in the future, however, then go with the Mac Pro because opening iMac=Warranty voided.

The ram in an iMac can be changed easily, there is a slot on the underside of the mac where is closed by a plate held in with a screw... Unscrew this and you have access to the ram for an easy upgrade without voiding your warranty!

Macs are not know for gaming, and they're expensive. If you've got the money to buy the Mac + software, Apple Care, etc. --- too pricey for my blood.

Those prices are a bit inflated, the person is asking about a Mac Pro that is about $2500, not $4999 (which is the starting price of the 12 core option). and some of those specs are off, as the i7 option for the iMac is only 2.93, not 2.8

I would recommend the iMac. I have the 27" Quad Core i7 2.8GHZ myself and I am a Visual effects Artist and Compositor as well as an editor and graphics designer. I constantly have After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Photoshop, Maya and other apps all open at once. The screen is perfect for editing too. I do all this with just 4GB of RAM. With 8GB you could do more. I talk here from experience. I hope this helps. Thumbs up if it does. I would also say with the iMac you get a screen with it (an amazing one) at no extra cost. In fact it is cheaper than the Mac Pro. I also play many games on here such as Crysis (Windows Partition), Half Life, Call of Duty. All at full graphics (apart from crysis which is nearly full).

I'd say the IMac a Mac pro is really for those who do intensive video editing animation and stuff of that nature

If you have the money just go straight for the Mac Pro. Seriously, there is never too much power and you'll be able to do anything you want to do. On the other hand, the iMac is still going to be a great computer, and will do all of your editing, gaming, etc - just make sure you get the specs and look into everything.

Sleep on this, what kind of games are you going to be playing? Make sure the hardware will match the games or otherwise you might be dissapointed. For photo editing if your going to be using Photoshop you should be good with even just basic specs, I edit on Photoshop with 3 GB's ram with no problem.

Your choice.

I'd get the Mac Pro, but if you do that, keep in mind that it takes up more room because it's not an all-in-one computer, plus you'll have to buy the monitor seperate.

As stated above, Mac is not good for gaming, but you can always run bootcamp to solve that!

From the systems you gave above: Go with the iMac. It's a all-in-one combo with more RAM and more HDD space. Xeon cores are really more server based, anyway. Same amount of threads on both chips. I'm sure the i7 in there is more than enough for what you want to do. It's 4 core running each at 2.8Ghz per core, plus there will be turbo boost, and hyper threading, which makes it seem like 8 cores. It's plenty--it's more than plenty!

Personally, on a side note, if you're focused more on gaming, take that same amount of money and put it on a Windows-based PC. You'll see more advanced hardware and a more compatible OS for games, for the same price, if not a little cheaper. If it's the editing you're more interested in, stay on the path you're on! Mac is ideal for this.

In this case, I'd go with the iMac.
