I've seen a couple of related posts and even posted a few questions myself on concerns that I've had related to the use of dreaded the downvote option. While I have personally wanted such and option myself, and have even advocated as much in some FB posts, the tight connection to karma points in this venue opens up a nasty downside to the "feature" that I really feel disuades people from initiating conversations. If the penalty for bad questions is a bad reputation, or no progress toward the karma challenge, that is one thing. However, when people can keep others down and erase the progress of other fellow competitors with virtually no effort...well, let's just say it takes the wind out of the innovation machine. By either removing the downvote option or at least removing/reducing the penalty significantly, you can go a long way towards empowering progress and building goodwill and not allowing people to wipe out the hard work of people who post to the site. So here is the question...Is the downvote valuable? Does FaceBook in fact have it right and merely the absense of "Like/Approve" is enough? If the downvote is actually valuable, should it be devalued to promote innovation and enthusiasm at the site? DON'T FORGET TO VOTE!!! |

In Facebook's case i feel down voting is not needed, on this site I think it is needed, however if I down vote some one it is usually because they are wrong or the question is not approach. I have only down voted a couple of times and I can probably name most of them... with that said... there is no doubt that people are abusing the down vote. on this site and i feel it can be improved
I feel it is fair if I down vote someone my karma goes down, it does help prevent abuse, however if there is a good reason to down vote some one, why am I being punished shouldn't I get karma? its kinda a touchy subject and I don't expect solution because it would be hard to come up with a fair one that both punishes abuse and rewards proper usage.

Okay, so here is my pitch. Down votes feel a whole lot like peer pressure and the logic behind them is just about as lame most of the time. Theoretically, the value of a down vote is the feedback on the recipient but is it really that valuable to beat down someone (again the peer pressure metaphor). Isn't the shear lack of support (up votes and positive responses) to a question enough? Isn't the sound of crickets chirping and nothing happening to your product enough? Personally I think so. It is good enough for capitalism, it should be good enough for the LG Q & A board! |
