Okay, maybe it's a trick question.

The world has been forced to sit idle and wait for a private corporation to do something; the United States government has been completely ineffective in putting a cap on the situation.

Here's my real question: what can the average person actually DO about the situation? What changes can we effectively make in our patterns?

Sadly, only one BP can ruin the Gulf.

@MichaelTheGeek2: Would you prefer a world where many BPs could ruin the gulf?

To an extent there is nothing we really can to because it would take millions of dollars to gather a crew and ship and build a plug or cap to fix the mess. All I guess we can do right now is go to the beaches and rescue the animals.

Just one... oh but wait there is the contractor who was doing the drilling... the equipment came from someone else... the only connection that BP has here is that they own the site... but the rest was caused by contractors hired by BP... so shouldn't they be also held responsible?

Quit slamming BP. They aren't like Satan or anything. If any oil company would do a good job cleaning up, it would be BP. They're BRITISH, come on!

Just One. But they do the damage if 1 million. I am boycotting BP from now on and I want everyone who is reading this to boycott too.

The answer to the title is one. What can a average persone do, lets see... nothing. Are you going to protest that the Gulf is being f-ed up? GO ahead... like no-body knows it.

Seems to me the oil companies employ the minimum standards they can get away with. Hence we've seen many oil spills before, and rig accidents.

The likes of BP make enough money, that even multi-million dollar fines don't do much to their bottom line.

They're like the banks, consumed by naked greed, and screw whoever gets in the way.

Governments are in bed with them too, in any case, whatever BS comes out of Washington.
