Do you think the grouped "conversations" in Gmail are confusing?

Do you think the grouped "conversations" in Gmail are confusing? I find it too easy to miss responses because they are buried in an email from hours or even days before. I think there needs to be a way to set preferences so that emails can be viewed as grouped conversations or chronologically. Is there a way to do this?
