Over the past couple years people have been discussing this subject more and more as we get closer to the year 2012. Me personally, I don't believe the world will end so to speak, but I think that the shift in the polars will cause some major damage to the Earth. What do you guys think? -Alex |

You know, I once saw a news broadcast claiming that a meteor was headed towards the Earth and we only had a few months to live. It frightened me because it looked and felt like real broadcasters covering the story. Then a commercial break came on and a disclaimer was shown informing me that it was a dramatization. Sort of an Orson Wells type thing. Same holds true for the end of the world theory of 2012. It is simply panicky pseudo-scientists who think they understand how things work but don't. Will the World end? Certainly it will, without question, the only question is how and when. We could be struck by a large meteor but this has always been a danger. A planet or small star on course to collide with the Earth? Not. Planets align in a certain way to destroy us? Well, the planets have been on their current orbits for billions of years and we are still here. Giant solar storms? The Sun goes through a regular cycle of heavy and low activity every 11 years, nothing new there. Now we come to your question, the Polar shift. The Earth's magnetic field changes on a somewhat irregular basis, according to NASA, about every 400,000 years. The people claiming imminent disaster, instant movements of the continents thousands of miles, earthquakes, super volcanoes and other scary things are trying to connect the magnetic field of the Earth with the physical rotation of the planet, some even claim the Earth will actually reverse rotation. In reality, there is no connection. The shift in the magnetic field of the Earth does occur but does not happen in an instant, instead it takes thousands of years. The next one is not expected for the next few millennium anyway. Besides, there is no evidence that a reversal of the magnetic field causes any harm to the Earth whatsoever. Eventually, in about 5 billion years, our Sun will die and the Earth will either be destroyed or rendered lifeless. I, for one, do not take the websites seriously about the polar shift. Check out NASA's response to these "threats." http://www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012.html |

I really don't believe in 2012. I believe you have better chances of winning the lottery than an asteroid hitting the earth. |

You know that the reversal of the poles is a natural thing and we'd be long dead if it didn't happen? The Earth is enveloped in a geomagnetic sphere that spans thousands of miles out into space. The poles reversal keeps this field in check. If that didn't happen and the field weakened, then we would be a lot more affected by cosmic and solar radiation.

Not really. They said the same thing about the year 2000, pretty much. People that believe in such conspiracy theories tend to be the ones that also think WiFi is going to kill them, and wear tin foil hats. |

I absolutely do not believe that the world will end in 2012 based on any of the Mayan calendar predictions. As a believer in Christ, I think that the Mayans were vicious, devil-worshiping people who performed human sacrifices. The Mayan prophecy holds no ground and the world will end according to the prophecies of the Old and New Testaments. This is, of course, my own personal belief system and I hope that no one is offended by this :). |

I don't believe it it, never will never have. But I do think it made a great movie. :) This is my first answer BTW :D |

No. The true definition for apocalypse is a revelation, or new beginning. It was Christianity that warped the definition into symbolic imagery which now dominates our society and skews the true meaning of the term which has led to this conspiracy. Will something happen in 2012? probably, but not the end of the world. |

No I Stand by Stephen Hawking's thoughts. I am very well educated in the Physics area and so I am a big scientific believer. I am certain the World will not end in 2012. There is no logical reason for it ending yet, The only thing that will cause the world to end is when our Sun goes into Supernova and destroys the galaxy. The sun has another 4 Billion years of Hydrogen supplied Fusion left yet. We will have moved to other planets and found ways to escape such a tragic event before our world ends. |

The Mayan calender doesn't say apocalypse. 2012 is supposed to be a year of celebration and a new era according to the Mayans. So it really doesn't mean anything. I also see no reason the world will end. Ask yourself this, did y2k happen?. It's the media that makes it more believable even so I wouldn't believe it. |

I believe I already stated this question somewhere else on the site but here I go again. Yes there will be the year 2012, no nothing significant to the world will probably happen |
