Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI) | the collective name for a number of activities people undertake to search for extraterrestrial life. SETI projects use scientific methods to search for electromagnetic transmissions from civilizations on distant planets.[1][2] The United States government contributed to earlier SETI projects, but recent work has been primarily funded by private sources.

There are great challenges in searching across the sky for a first transmission that could be characterized as intelligent, since its direction, spectrum and method of communication are all unknown beforehand. SETI projects necessarily make assumptions to narrow the search, and thus no exhaustive search has been conducted so far.

Even if a signal for help was found, it would most likely be light years away, too far for us to do anything. The event would most likely be over. Let's concentrate on problems on Earth, ya think?!?

SETI telescopes are turned off; ET gets a busy signal

alt text

"... The global financial crisis has just gone intergalactic. Citing a lack of funds, astronomers at the SETI Institute in California have closed down the Allen Telescope Array. I guess that means if ET tries to reach out to Earth, he'll get one of those annoying "this number is no longer in service" messages ..."

Well we have this great big universe that is giant and it would be really sad if we were the only life in the massive universe. So no I believe that one day we might find something.

yup we definitely should.

like stephen hawking said, its dangerous to send signals in space which could help locate our position. cuz if there are ET out there and if they manage to get to our Earth somehow then they will only bring destruction cuz they're just more intelligent than us.

kinda like we invading animal's home (jungle).

I agree With You chris. We should keep searching because there is something(s) out there, we just have to find them

I think we should keep looking. I think it would be amazing to find some other civilization out there. And if there is another civilization out there they are probably looking for us as well.

It's pointless. We aren't going to gain anything out of this. I think yes, use the resources to concentrate on earth.

Came across this the other day: Peter Ward, Paleontologist at the University of Washington, contributor to SETI, tries to answer this exact question in a segment entitled "Why E.T. Never Calls." Fascinating interview from Big Think http://bit.ly/cp5RJ6

Interesting question for sure. I believe there has to be intelligent life somewhere in the universe, the odds for it, based on mathematical calculations, are just too great in its favor. It seems to me that we, as humans, are arrogant to think that we are the only ones in the infinitely large universe.

I do not, however, believe we have ever been visited by aliens, that humans have been abducted, our ancient ancestors were influenced by them, etc. That being said, I have and continue to use SETI@HOME, which is a program that analysis SETI's signals, looking for signs of life out there. I don't believe we will discover any other life for some time, but I do believe it will happen one day.

So, if life on another world exists and we are likely not going to find it any time soon, why continue to look? Even if we do find it, it will likely be so far away that we could not visit them for many generations. Personally, I think we should continue our search. Simply the knowledge that there are other intelligent life forms would change the way we see ourselves. Maybe that knowledge would make us realize just how insignificant we are in the great scheme of things.

What if we not only found other life but was able to contact and communicate with them? Could you imagine the effect that would have on a global scale? The world's human powers might come together and, instead of different countries that fight among themselves, we would realize that we must come together as one planet and work to expand and share our collective knowledge, as well as learn from the aliens.

Then there is also the possibility that the race we do discover is some sort of evil, Klingon type race who want nothing more than to take over every planet they come across. We would not be able to defend ourselves in that case. On the other hand, if they are too willing to help and share knowledge we, as humans, would take advantage of their kindness and, if we don't get what we feel we deserve, destroy them.

It's a chance I think we must take to make sure the human race continues to evolve and grow. Yes, we should continue the search.

Definitely keep looking. Worst case we never find anything and its business as usual. Best case we find something and learn a few things from them. In either case the efforts and technologies created will trickle down and benefit us all. Technology always finds a way to become a solution for more then the intended purpose
