These are my top reason to truly give a app a five star rating.

  1. Fast load with in app browser. (like clicking a link within tweetdeck)

  2. Offline reading option for wifi an data intensive users. (like AP and TechCrunch dose)

  3. Tweeting, facebook and email in app options. (like mashable dose)

  4. Address app crash reports in timely manner. (like SFnetNews dose not)

  5. Open in safari or Skyfire option.(yes I know they want to keep you therein there app)

  6. If adds banners must be placed on apps don't place them strategically were one might hit them. (i'm married i don't need a dating app to pop up and take me away from what i was reading cause i have sausage for fingers)

  7. Have frequency options for push notifications. (never seen this option but some apps do a little to much pushing)

I judge / rate an application based on it's overall performance and relevance to it's description and genre. Therefore, some categories used to rate an app may not apply to applications of different genres. For example, the questions I ask myself when judging or rating an application are:

  • Gaming applications - does the game play smoothly, does it have enough features to justify it's price, does it have an acceptable and easy to use UI (user interface), is the entire game of an equal quality, and does it exceed or fall short of my expectations of the application before I installed it based on the screenshots provided by the developer and description, along with any reviews and/ or gameplay videos? Also, if it is a port of a game on another console, I often consider whether or not it has been optimized for the device I am playing it on.
  • Social applications - does it allow me to communicate / access the content intended to be viewed with the application more easily than I could have if I had viewed it in the native browser of my device, is the UI accessible enough to allow me to communicate with ease, is the application completely secure (in the case of applications requiring login details or managing browsing history), and does it actually allow me to do what the description of the application states.

Remember, most of these terms for judging or rating an application not only apply to mobile apps for the App Store and Android Marketplace, but for software in general too, and I think that the list of terms for an application to be considered a "five-star" application (at the time of using the application - because sometimes applications can become outdated over time or outperformed by competition) is a fair list that developers should be able to adhere to with ease if they put enough effort into the development of their application and are passionate about providing their customers with the best experience that they could possibly have whilst using their application.

Just once it is a good quality app. For instance if it's a game, then I like it to be a quick loading pretty experience. If it's a social app I like it to be able to run in the background and allows my to get push notifications for any messages or updates received. I have a few productivity and utility apps, I only like them if they do as described very easily.
