I have a friend. He wants a Mac. He has two different options. His first option is a Macbook Pro. It would be a 13 inch with 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo chip. It would have 4GB RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. He would also have iWork pre-installed and he would get an aluminum Apple remote. His second option would be a combo. First he would get one of the new Aluminum Mac Minis. It would have all the same specs as the Macbook Pro, with the exception that he would get an Apple wireless keyboard too. The second part of the combo would be a 16GB Wifi iPad. As for a monitor, he has a 32 Inch HDTV. He would buy a Mini DIsplay to HDMI if he got the Macbook Pro and then use both the TV and Macbook Pro for a duel monitor setup. If he got the new Mac Mini which now comes with an HDMI port, he would pick up an HDMI to HDMI cable and use just his 32 inch TV as a monitor. He already has a mouse that's compatible with Macs. If he chose the Macbook Pro, it would be great as he could plug it into his TV and have two monitors and then easily take it on vacation with him. If he had the Mac Mini and iPad, he would have a great home theater and a tablet that would be great for vacation. As well as that, he could get the Air Display app for his iPad or use it for something else. So the question is simple: which do you think he should choose? |

I would say the Macbook Pro. It is a great machine that would do anything that you need. You just don |

Only your friend can really answer this question, does he need to do work out and about, then the Mac pro is going to be more useful, does he work mainly at home and use laptop mainly for email internet when out and about then mini + iPad option is a winner. By the way the ipad is insanely good (writing this answer on my new iPad now) :-) |

You've summarized his options quite well, but it really does come down to which config will give him the most utility and enjoyment. If he needs to do hardcore computing when he's away from home, then the laptop option's optimal, otherwise I'd say go with the Mac Mini + iPad combo. The battery life on the iPad is awesome and it's an ideal form factor for consuming media (videos, social media, music, games, books, etc.) and participating online. Where the iPad falls short is if you need specialized apps and/or an optical drive (and more storage space) to create media (videos, high res huge photos, audio, etc.) |
