  • I have Apple Care. Macbook is 2.5 years old
  • I ran Tech Tool and all systems passed.
  • But When i unplug my Macbook it goes dead.
  • I have to keep it plugged in to use it and there are no problems using it
  • The Battery indicator in the top right hand corner says (Not Charging)
  • The light is green (that plugs in Macbook) and i know the power was around 80% before it went funny
  • I took the battery out pressed the button and it shows 4 lights out of 5. then put the battery back in. No joy
  • Once i was able to use the Macbook without the power cable but it went dead after 20 minutes of use.
  • I will ring Apple Care tomorrow, I think I need a new power adopter, am i right? -- Hope i am
  • I look after my power adopter, there are no cuts in the wires or cracks in the white thing.

Looks like the battery cannot hold it charge anymore, it needs replacement.

Has to either be the battery or the power adapter. Yeah, give Apple Care a shot.

Battery's likely dead/dying, as others have said. How many charge cycles does it say are on your battery? Open System Profiler and click the title "Power" under the Hardware section. Look down where it says "Health Information:" and you'll see a number and the words "Cycle count:"

What's the number your system reports?

My MacBook Pro is 15 months old and its battery was at around 157 cycles and it was almost useless... it would hard shutdown the system (no warning, no saving of data or memory contents) randomly at varying battery charge levels, including as high as 59% charged (reportedly.)

Bought a new battery and followed Apple's "How to Condition Your Lithium-ion Battery" knowledge base entry, which you might want to check out if you get a new battery, too.

Thanks for this info. My cycle count is 160. & it says condition normal. Yes i recalibrate my battery twice a year. So i have done it 5 times since i bought it 2.5 years ago. I guess i did well for it to last that long.

its not because ur battery is old, its cuz the battery isn't getting charged at all. probably a wire is loose.

Probably the contacts between the battery and the Macbook are broken or something. Other option is that your battery is just old. Just pass this problem on to Apple Care.

  • Just as i reckoned the battery is a consumable product and not covered under Apple Care
  • But i will bring it to my Nearest Service provider (i rang them) and they will test the battery and if the plan covers the cost they will let me know and if it doesn't i will have to buy a new battery. In fact to be fair i should have to buy a battery.
  • it will be monday or tuesday before i get to the service provider. They are 50 miles away from me.
  • The Apple care man said it seems to be the battery and it's gone.

Believe it or not it was a Logic Board gone in the end. So it didn't cost me a cent cause i had apple care. Brought it in to be fixed last tuesday and it was repaired by friday.
