With the constantly changing DRM in bluray movies, bluray players require constant updates. What happens when the companies that make these players choose to no longer make updates for an older model of bluray player? Will users be forced to replace an otherwise perfectly functioning bluray player in order to watch movies simply because it is no longer profitable for the company to provide updates for an older model? |

Sry to bump a old thread, a friend of mine who had a old bluray player (non updatable one) is currently unable to play some new bluray movies. I will have to ask him for the exact model but earlier today he was telling me that his bluray player wont play some newer movies. I wonder how long before the current updateable blu ray players, stop getting updates. |

As more newer movies comes out, they come out with newer encryption. If the manufacturer does not update the console, you are in trouble. This happened with some players recently and the newer disc cannot play it. Best to get is a PS3 |

not just DRM but DECSS that is in every frame of video and audio. As movie companies find creative ways to embedded the scrambled codes in each frame (2 years ago it was just between each track!!), the players need to be updated. If these updates fail you have a brick or no way of playing. however don't worry too much as you and I are not in the know of what the movies companies are really doing with the DVD/bluray players media protection. I have had a bluray for 3 years, and have yet to have a movie not play correctly as many new movies have a few tricky digital data embedded to detect if you have the disc in a player or a computer thus a trust is made between the media and the player, think of this as a hand shake or public KEY that would be on both the player and the media disc itself. strange stuff :D |
