My dad's computer is on its last limb and I was planning to hand over my old pc to my dad for a gift this summer. However, my old pc is kind of slow and needs to be clean out. The OS on the old pc is Windows XP.I am asking for recommendations on how to clean out and speed up my old pc.

CCleaner program (it's free) and a can of compressed air will do it

Clean out all of the dust in it and defragment the hard drive.

Fresh clean install will most likely boost performance the most. Make sure to back up all data that you don't want to loose before the fresh install.

Also dust of all components inside using a can of compressed air.

If you don't want to do a fresh install then I recommend downloading "Free Registry Defrag" to defrag your registry, "Revo Uninstaller" to uninstall any old software that you won't need anymore, "AusLogics Disk Defrag" to defragment your Hard Drive, "TweakNow RegCleaner Std" to clean your registry, "Quick StartUp" to speed up boot time(startup), and "CCleaner" which are all free programs I know of.

After the fresh install, defrag, etc. > http://www.pcpitstop.com/ ... Run the tests. This will make recommendations to optimize the system.

Tweaks : Can you max out your connection speed? | Your PC may not be tuned properly to take full advantage your full connection speed. For those with high speed connections (faster cable networks, FiOS, etc), tuning your TCP stack is necessary if you wish to fully utilise the available bandwidth in one single download.
