It is 1000 points

But like others have said, it is best to avoid using it as it hurts your points also and is someone truly posts something that doesn't belong or breaks the rules then report them if needed.

Only down vote when you absolutely have to, if someone says something about a product that you didn't want to hear, don't down vote, as it hurts theirs, and your karma points.

The question was how much karma is required to down-vote, not when it's appropriate to use said privilege.

Good, okay, so go down vote away! Dont say I didn't warn you.

Your warning is irrelevant to the topic being addressed, but thanks anyway.

Irrelevant to the topic? WTH are you talking about? How is down voting irrelevant to the topic of down voting? I swear some people just have no idea what they're talking about these days...

As I said before, the topic is "how many karma points are required to vote-down", NOT "when is it appropriate to vote down".

"How many points are required" is relevant to this thread.
"When is it appropriate to vote-down" is not, and should have its own thread.

If the purpose of downvoting is being questioned, then I suggest scrutinizing this answer. It doesn't answer the question at all. It answers a completely different question, and it answers it incorrectly ("how to allow a biased answer") by not mentioning justification or relevance. This answer, in my opinion deserves a downvote. If you wish to discuss this further, set up a question: "When is it appropriate to down-vote?".

Sorry to dig this question back up, but I'd like to know this too.

At the very least, getting the message "Sorry, but you don't have enough reputation points to downvote. Please check the faq" when the FAQ has no relevant information, is a bug that should be fixed.

I agree. If such a message is displayed, it is in the interest of preventing this "frequently asked question" from being asked redundantly. The message says the answer belongs there, and the question is obviously frequently asked, so why isn't the answer there?

My guess would be about 500, but I'm not 100% positive. You should try emailing Chris and asking him if it's not in the FAQ.
