California is considering making license plates electronic and having them display advertisements when a car is stopped or idle for more than a few seconds. Is this a good or bad idea?

So when that license plate gets wet, it wont work anymore, right? Therefore making your license plate number not show up? =D

Besides, don't cops take advantage of the time at stop lights so they can use their laptops easily?

In order to have changing advertisements, it would need to be hooked up to the internet. While a cop is trying to pull someone over, but is getting down the license plate number, I could hack the license plate, change the number, and then the guy will get in more trouble for stealing a license plate, when he didn't even steal it. =)

People really need to think these things over. We pay taxes as it is, why do we need some idiot who doesn't know how to drive, look at license plate advertisements?

I don't see how making adverts on license plate being very good. Police might have a tough time. People could rig it to change their number. It would make sense to have the adverts not on the license plate.

I agree, imagine a news headline: "License plate gets hacked," or "Security hole found in license plates."

I don't see any benefits unless it's a free car, and a free license plate. That is a pointless market, just like the DVD Rewinder.

The DVD rewinder works well and is good practice to always rewind your DVD's. I remember yesterday, I got a dvd from netflix and the last person who had it didn't rewind it. :)

I'm pretty sure the government isn't going to make the WHOLE plate electronic. If you click the source link, you will notice that there is a small picture on the left side of the license plate. I would think that the actual license plate number would be physical, and the picture would be electronic displaying ads.

In some cases, this could be a great idea. It is very possible to have this help create a new business or website you might have.

On the bad side of things, it would be a huge distraction for ADD or ADHD drivers. Now, most people on the planet has some form of this too, so all-in-all, this is a bad idea. If it is illegal to use a cell phone while driving for reaction time and the fact of paying attention, what makes California think ads on a license plate is safe?

From what I understand, we wouldn't be in control of what ads are displayed and we wouldn't receive any incentives such as a discount on our fees and registration.

Seems useless all round, But I would go for it if I got some of the ad money.

I wonder what will happen if the ad license plates gets an ad for another license plate so people wont be able to tell which number is yours.

Are you kidding. Heck NO! Some people can not even use a telephone when their are in a car. Now these same (people) are going to be hypnotized at every stop light. And, if even one of the hundreds of drivers stuck behind these hypnotized drivers should honk their horn to wake them up they will soil their pants, or worse.

I was surprised yesterday when I read the article in my local newspaper. Their goal with this is to create a new source of revenue for the state of California and it wouldn't get implemented until 2013 if at all. I see problems with this. Possible future headline like "License plate(s) hacked". I hope this doesn't pass. I don't want to advertise anything (even if I like the product) on my car and not get paid to do so. Unless I get at least part of the revenue I don't want it. If anything they should make it an option instead of mandatory.

I think it is another little way of squeezing money out of people. Personally I think it is stupid using these little things to try to increase the economy

If I get paid out of displaying an ad on my car, thumbs up.
