I'm using active kill disk at work to refurbish a couple of laptops. It wipes over all the sectors on a hard drive with random 0's and 1's. Is it really necessary to perform more than one pass?

depends on how secure you want it, i like to do 3, but even with 3 passes information can still be recovered but unlikely. it is said that some branches of the government uses 7... the guttman algorithm uses 35...

so depends on how secure you want it, yes you need to do more then one, i would do 3 or 7 but if your paranoid use the guttman algorithm, if your program allows you to

The Department of Defense only requires 3 passes on their hard drives.
