Although you can use either VMWare or Parallels to run any Windows program on a Mac alongside your Mac programs - for most hard-core games I would actually recommend using Boot Camp instead.
VMWare and Parallels work great for pretty much all general Windows apps. I use Parallels all the time on my Mac to run Microsoft Office and several other Windows programs I decided I couldn't do without. However, I have actually never seen many (hard-core, modern, 3d) games that run all that great on VMWare or Parallels, despite both company's claims to the contrary.
Boot Camp is free, it's already on your Mac. You will, however, need a legitimate copy of Windows in order to set it up.

Have you heard about steam? They made it cross platform for mac. You can play games like portal now. Not only is portal compatible with mac but it's free. There are other games too, check it out! http://store.steampowered.com/browse/mac
