Chris surprised me earlier today when he called to tell me he was giving me his iPhone 3GS! I've long needed a smartphone, and have even tested a few recently. (Watch for an upcoming review of the HP iPAQ Glisten on Chris' blog!) I've never owned a phone of this type, but with the amount of work I do, it's become a necessity. I'm excited that Chris is sending me the iPhone. I've only used one a couple of times in the past to "play with" it for a few moments, so I don't have a clue yet what I'm in for. I need your help! What type of case do you recommend? Brand? Hard or silicone? What FREE apps are "must-have" for me? Keep in mind that I won't be playing games on the phone, so please don't suggest those. At first, I am looking for productivity, social media and music (listening - not creating) apps. Thanks for your help!

here is my reccomendation http://www.amazon.com/iFrogz-Luxe-Case-iPhone-Black/dp/B001EZMGE8 I have this one in Blue..seeing the price on amazon is making me cry though. I paid 30 at best buy for mine lol. |

I have a list for you: Twitter: Tweetdeck, Seesmic (for Ping.fm), IM: AIM, Skype, Wordpress, dragon dictation and search, Evernote, FileApp, DropBox, Moocha VNC, skobbler (car like GPS interface), iBooks, Wikipanion Browsers: Opera Mobile May I also recommend a OttorBox iPhone 3GS Case (strong and does not really interfere with the buttons and screen, except when using a dock connector) |
|
I defiantly suggest checking out the Incase Slider. It protects your phone well, does not scratch it, and is the best case for a dock because the bottom slides off. The applications that you should check out are Facebook, Twitter, The Weather Channel, and Pandora. These are all great applications to start with. |

mobile me! Mobile Me!! MOBILE ME!!!
I highly recommend to JAILBREAK your newly acquired iPhone 3G[s].
1
Good recommendation on MobileMe although it's not free. I waited until I had iPhone + iPad + iMac + MacBook Pro before I finally (yesterday in fact) bit the bullet and subscribed. You do get a free 2 month trial, though... or at least we did with our new iPhone 4's. I won't be jailbreaking anything, no. :) Thanks for all the suggestions so far! Keep them coming! Ugh... Jailbraking is against Apple's EULA and anyways my friends had bad problems with their jailbroken iPod Touches. Archaeme, read Title 17, Section 1201, Pusuit F, Paragraph 1, of the DMCA as of 1999, it's legal. |

I highly recommend the Seidio Innocase II Surface Spring Clip Holster Combo for iPhone 3G & 3GS -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001GPL39A/ref=wms_ohs_product It can be used with or without the holster belt-clip portion, if you just want the case protection (superb) of the iPhone itself. Even if you're not a fan of wearing belt clip phone holsters, it's handy to clip inside a bag so the phone doesn't inevitably sink to the bottom. I've linked to the blue case (it's a deep blue with a little metallic sheen to it--very nice), but it also comes in black. Fair warning: The weakest point on the case is the top clip that holds the iPhone in place; mine didn't break for well over a year, but then I jammed the phone in one day & broke the plastic clip. As for FREE productivity, social media & music listening apps:
And because I'm a space geek I just have to give these a plug; they'd fall under "Education" or "Reference" --
I'm always on the prowl for new free apps, so I look forward to what else folks suggest! |

enjoying the free stuff are we?
Yes, I am, thank you. Well - I will be once it gets here. :)
Did you watch the video? And do you realize how NOT "free" this phone is? :)
It's still free regardless, I don't see the "work" done. This site alone, I've seen you on very little.
Nope, you wouldn't "see" my on here much. You'd see me logged in as Chris, though. You'd see me uploading all of the videos and getting them onto the blog. You'd see me helping to run the chat room and Geeks.pirillo.com. You'd see me helping to organize/plan Gnomedex. You'd see me working with our sponsors. You'd see me helping get content onto the blog and various social media feeds. You'd see me handle all emails that come in to Chris from the community about this site, Geeks, and/or the live site. You'd see me do any number of things that Chris asks me to take care of... five days a week for three years now.
But you're right. You don't SEE the work I do. :)
In my opinion, you don't deserve it. Based on the posts and comments you've made to me in the past, you defiantly don't deserve it.
You're welcome to your opinion, Eric. I'm sorry you feel that I don't "deserve" something, simply because I make sure rules are followed, and that people act in a mature and responsible manner. :)
Thanks for your opinion, though. :)
Actually, it's your abusive tone with me that I dislike. Rules are fine, we all need rules. But you've been mistreating me with your tone and language.
I mistreat no one, and I am one of the nicest moderators you'll ever meet. I attempted to remind you that you were getting upset over something that isn't even an issue. You took it completely wrong, and then fired back with exceedingly rude comments. I will not allow behavior that way here, not directed at me or ANY other member.
You didn't seem to look down on jakek090 last week when he was randomly closing questions. But you get on my case for one single little edit?
Yeah... you're really nice...
Maybe if you could see my point of view, and not always taking the side of others. Maybe if you made me feel like a welcomed member, instead of like an outcast, maybe then I'd have a different opinion of you.
How do you know if I did or not? You do not see every comment/email/message that is sent from me to anyone else on this site, Eric. If someone is reported, I take action on the issue. I chose to respond to your problem publicly in the thread b/c that is where you were throwing a fit about it.
Just because you cannot see everything that is done does NOT mean nothing was done at all. :)
I still feel like you singled me out needlessly. It seems like all you high karma people (and moderators) are part of some little club that looks down on others who aren't as high up in the ranks as you are.
Considering the number of good questions and answers that I've posted, I would expect more of a welcome than what I've received around here.
How am I making you feel like an outcast? YOU are the one who started a fight in a comment thread about editing. Instead of dropping the issue, or coming to me for clarification, you continued to drag it out publicly. I didn't do that.. you did. I simply stepped in and responded after FOUR people complained about it. Those are only the ones who emailed.. it doesn't even include all of the ones who clicked to report the comments anonymously.
And instead of seeing my point of view, you (do I really need to repeat myself).
It just seems like everyone here hates me.
Having karma has nothing to do with it. I couldn't tell you how much I have, nor do I care. I don't need it, nor do I want it. I am here to run this website to the best of my ability. When there's a problem, I deal with it. Otherwise, I try to leave it to all of you to handle whenever possible.
It's not about Karma when I step in or "do" something. It's about my job. :)
Well in my opinion, your "job" has been to single me out. This isn't the first time you singled me out, and guess what, it's always some higher ranked member you take the side of!
Why can't you just be nice to me?
My JOB is as Chris' assistant and community manager. This site falls under that. If ANYONE is acting inappropriately, then I need to take action on that. I didn't single you out, Eric. You singled yourself out when you kept going on and on in that other thread instead of dropping the issue... just as you're doing here.
I AM being nice to you, for the record. Most people would have found themselves banned long before now for arguing with others on the site. We don't allow it. I have been giving you a lot of leeway, and attempting to talk to you instead. I felt that was a better way to handle this.
How is that NOT being "nice?"
